From renovating a historic boarding school to planting a thousand trees — every project is a step toward a transformed Somali Region.
Shaykosh Boarding School
Shaykosh Boarding School in sheygosh, Qoraxay Zone, Somali Regionis Daryeel's flagship project. Founded decades ago, the school serves students from seven zones across the region — many of whom travel great distances from remote pastoralist communities.
When Daryeel first assessed the school, they found dilapidated infrastructure, no proper library, collapsed ceilings, unsafe dormitories, non-functional toilets — and yet 454 resilient boarding students showing up every day. The diaspora community answered.
Major Achievements
- Building siteworks & green areas: More than 1,200 m of main road entrance constructed for safe movement within the school compound. A 60-cm-high HCB wall and a 1,000-meter boundary wall finished with plastering and color painting for durability, security, and environmental friendliness.
- Improving education quality: The Somali Diaspora has played a significant role through targeted academic support, teacher incentives, and community engagement initiatives at Shaykosh Boarding School.
- Library renovation and complete furnishing with new books
- New separate latrines for boys and girls
- Modern handwashing stations at all key points
- Expanded water supply system and new water tanks

Girls' Education & Women's Empowerment
In pastoralist communities, girls face unique barriers to education — early marriage, distance from schools, lack of safe sanitation, and cultural expectations. Daryeel directly addresses each of these barriers.
Currently 62 girls are enrolled at Shaykosh Boarding School — a number we are working to dramatically increase. Our goal is to reach at least 70% female enrollment through targeted support and infrastructure improvements.
Safe, Separate Sanitation
Dedicated toilets, shower facilities, and handwashing stations exclusively for girls — critical for keeping them in school.
Uniforms & School Supplies
Providing full school uniforms, exercise books, pens, and bags to girls from the most vulnerable families.
Safe Dormitories
Renovated, secure dormitory spaces where girls sleep safely with proper lighting and separate access.
Academic Support
Extra tutoring, mentorship from university volunteers, and library access specifically encouraged for girls.
Environmental Sustainability & Tree Planting
The Somali Region faces severe environmental degradation from decades of overgrazing, drought, and deforestation. Daryeel is proud to lead a school-based greening initiative that transforms bare, dusty compounds into lush, productive green spaces.

Water, Sanitation & Hygiene (WASH)
Before Daryeel's intervention, Shaykosh School had no functioning toilets for girls, inadequate water supply, and no handwashing infrastructure. This was not just uncomfortable — it was a major reason girls dropped out of school.

Community Mosque Construction
As part of Daryeel's commitment to holistic community development, we are supporting the construction and renovation of a community mosque in the Kebri Dahar area. This facility will serve as a vital centre of spiritual gathering, community cohesion, and social support for families in the surrounding area.
The mosque project is currently ongoing — construction is underway and progressing steadily with the support of the local community and diaspora contributions. Upon completion, it will serve hundreds of worshippers from the broader Kebri Dahar community.

Community-Led
Designed in direct consultation with local elders and community leaders to reflect the community's needs and values.
Diaspora-Funded
Supported through contributions from the Somali diaspora in Minneapolis, Canada, Europe, and Australia.
Spiritual & Social Hub
Beyond worship, the mosque will serve as a gathering space for community events, education circles, and social support.

Beyond the school, Daryeel is committed to the holistic development of Kebri Dahar and surrounding communities. Future projects include:
Community Mosque
Construction and renovation of community mosques to serve as centers of spiritual and social gathering.
Community Hall
A multipurpose hall for community meetings, vocational training, women's circles, and cultural events.
ICT Lab
A computer laboratory at Shaykosh School to equip students with digital skills for the modern economy.
School Kitchen
A modern, hygienic kitchen to provide nutritious daily meals for all 454 boarding students.
Dormitory Extension
New dormitory blocks to accommodate growing enrollment, especially as girls' enrollment increases.
New Classroom Blocks
Additional classrooms to reduce overcrowding and support the 7,102 total students at the school.
